It’s summer now and like you, I will be eyeing off the latest hot trends in clothing. But like you, I’m also trying to be able to pay my bills on time, and therefore as great as the new Fendi x Minaj collection looks, I have to follow a budget. So here are 3 new rules to save money on clothes.
Rule 1: Buy good basics
Say it a bit louder for those in the back, buying good quality basics will fill out your wardrobe for years. Forget Big W and Target, go to a store like Uniqlo for your basics. These are on-trend, single colour basic-wear pieces that will last you a life-time and look fantastic. The clothing is also really weather resistant and you’ll feel comfortable wearing them all year round.
Rule 2: Buy a few good standout pieces
Ok, so you’ve got your basics. But we can’t wear a single black turtle-neck with black pants our whole lives (trust me I’ve tried). If you have a party or some fun event to attend, you want to jazz up your outfit. This is what Zara is for. Yes, it is fast-fashion, but the quality of the clothing is actually very good. Zara reproduces the hottest trends from the runways very quickly so you will look like a fashion-model with just a few items from their collection! And they are super cheap! Switching my shopping from department stores to Zara definitely helped me save money on clothes.
Rule 3: For the rest … hit up the op shop!
Op shops are great for quirky pieces or anything outside of basics that you may like. Many trendy op shops actually stock clothing that is in fashion, so you don’t have to look daggy if you’re on a budget. It is also environmentally conscious as you are recycling clothes.
Bonus: Try the 1 in 1 out rule
So this isn’t strictly budgeting advice, but it is a good way to make sure that you are conscious about how much you buy. The 1 in 1 out rule is simple. Whenever you buy a piece of clothing donate or sell something you own. If you force yourself to do this, you will think much more consciously.
I got new rules I count them! Saving money on clothes can take such a huge dent out of your budget and following these rules make it so easy. There is nothing more glamorous than a full wallet.
